A Personal Message from Chris Hobgood
President of the Disciples Center for Public Witness
Like many of you, I oppose the war in Iraq and believe the best way to support our troops is to bring
them home soon.
If you agree with me, please
sign our statement calling for the end of the Iraq War and for creative
solutions to achieve peace in the Middle East.
By joining our voices with our ecumenical and interfaith partners, we strengthen the faith-based
movement in opposition to the war. By speaking out as Disciples, we continue the momentum that
began in Fort Worth when the General Assembly passed
Resolution 0728, The Church's Response to the War in Iraq.
Because of the recent controversy about this resolution within our denomination, many Disciples who oppose the continuation
of the war and actually voted for this resolution are now backing away from the substance of the
resolution and shying away from speaking out on this important issue.
Please don't be one of them. We can disagree agreeably and deal pastorally
with our troops and military families without compromising our principles or becoming skiddish
on such a crucial issue. Join me and other Disciples in speaking out on the war by signing the
statement today.
